Off-season

The Chargers have not re-signed All-Pro quarterback Drew Brees for contract, Brees has suffered a torn labrum on the throwing shoulders in the final game of the season, and turned to 2004 round selection of Philip Rivers. Brees will then sign a contract with New Orleans Saints as a free agent and make a complete recovery.

The charger announced in January that the team would no longer attempt to place proposals for the new stadium in November voting because they could not find a private partner to facilitate project financing. The team has started talks with city officials in 2002 stating that Qualcomm Stadium is inadequate to meet the financial needs of the franchise, and that they need the help of the city in building a new stadium to stay competitive.

Training camp

Expectations vary for the 2006 Chargers season. Questions centered on games from QB Rivers that have not been tested in its first season began, and with offensive lines, especially in the remaining crucial positions. OLT Roman Oben injury in 2005 had a negative impact on all aspects of violation and the ability of Jordan Lender surrogates to protect QB Rivers blindside was not proven. Jordan was injured in the training camp and the second round of OT draft pick Marcus McNeill landed early work and went on to have the Pro Bowl season. Defend yourself, the seven fronts remain talented and solid. LB depth was tested with Steve Foley off the field; However, his replacement OLB Shaun Phillips (42 tackles, 23 assists, 11.5 sacks) comes with high-quality performance. The unit restored many key players, including Jamal Williams nose tackle, DE Luis Castillo, DE Igor Olshansky and 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year Shawne Merriman, who made Chargers the best team in the NFL against run in the 2005 season. Another area of concern is at secondary, Cromartie, who sat in his final season at Florida State with a knee injury, talented but experience not expected to contribute soon. Cromartie fills the 3rd CB role for the team and presses start to CB Drayton Florence for the time of play. Playing safety is becoming more of a concern especially with the arrest of DB Terrence Kiel by federal law enforcement officers on drug charges during the regular season and injuries back to DB Bhawoh Jue's knee.

The game continued and in the next game, Rivers threw the ball into Tomlinson as if it was a run game but then threw the ball into Antonio Gates open to tie the score on 14-14. The preferred filler boasted a list that included nine Pro Bowlers, five All-Pro players, and LaLainian Tomlinson league-backed MVP, who had broken some league records. However, four turnovers, three of which were converted into scoring Patriots, eventually led to the death of Chargers. San Diego eventually lost despite beating Patriots within yards, 148-51 and total yards, 352-327, while also intercepting three bait from Tom Brady.

In the first quarter, after San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer opted to do so on 4-and-11 instead of attempting a 47-yard pitch, quarterback Philip Rivers lost face when fired by Mike Vrabel, setting up Stephen Gostkowski's 51-field garden path with 40 seconds left in that period. In the second quarter, Shippers Chargers Eric Parker returned 13-yard scored a 48-yard scoring drive that ended with a 2-yard LaDainian Tomlinson touchdown, putting his team 7-0 up. Then, in the Patriots' next drive, linebacker Donnie Edwards intercepted a pass from Brady and returned it to the 41-yard line. But Chargers eventually became punting after Rivers was fired in third with defense behind Artrell Hawkins. Later in the quarter, Tomlinson rushed twice to 13 yards and took the 58-meter pass screen to the Patriots' 6 yard line, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by Michael Turner with 2:04 remaining in the half. New England responded with a 72-yard scoring drive, with Jaffar Gaffney's recipient catching four passes for 46 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown reception with six seconds left in half, cutting their deficit to 14-10.

In the third quarter, Brady made a second interception of the game. But again, Chargers were forced to punt after Rivers was fired on the third ladder. Mike Scifres '36 -yard pinned New England back on their own 2-yard line, and San Diego was then forced to kick the ball, but Parker held off a kick and New England David Thomas restored the lows on the 31-yard Chargers line. New England's impulse seemed to have stalled after Brady fumbled on 3 and 13. Patriots' tackle Matt Light recovered him and defensive Chargers back Drayton Florence drew an unsporting 15-yard penalty for a personal offense. The impulse continued and Gostkowski eventually kicked a 34-yard field field to cut their deficit to 14-13. Then, on the next drive of San Diego, the Colvin Rosevelt linebacker makes an interception of River bait on the 36-yard line of New England. The Patriot then drove to the 41-yard Chargers, but stopped there and had to kick the ball. After the kick, Rivers completed two operands to end Antonio Gates strictly 31 yards and a 31-yard bait to Vincent Jackson, scoring Tomlinson's second goal to give Chargers an 8-point, 21-13 advantage.

New England responded by driving to the San Diego 41-yard line. At the fourth conversion effort down, Brady's bait was intercepted by Marlon McCree, but Troy Brown took off the ball, and Reche Caldwell's receiver recovered. Schottenheimer then called a challenging timeout call officials interception and misses by McCree. The Chargers lost time when the official decision of the game was upheld. Four plays later, Brady threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Caldwell. In the next game, run back Kevin Faulk took a direct snap and scored a two-point convertible, tying the game. Then, after forcing the kick, Brady completed a 19-meter pass to Daniel Graham. Two dramas later, Caldwell caught a 49-yard pass on the right side to set up third-placed Gostkowski (31 yards) to give them a 24-21 lead with only 1:10 left in the fourth quarter. With no time left, San Diego drove into the 36-yard Patriots line on their last possession, but Nate Kaing's 54-yard field effort fell short with three seconds left in the game.

After the match, the Patriots erupted in controversial celebrations, mocking Lights Out dance from LB Shawne Merriman and stepping on the mid-field Chargers logo that made Chargers midfielder Philip Rivers and ran back LaDainian Tomlinson against the Patriots. The controversy was a response to a statement made by Schottenheimer after Chargers pulled out a 21-game winning streak Patriots 21 in 2005 in which he noted "I must be honest." During this week, I wondered, 'Is there a culmination point, suddenly you can not find enough fingers to stick the embankment? ', "referring to the injury that Patriot faced at the start of the 2005 season.

Gaffney finished with ten catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Tomlinson rushed for 123 yards, caught two passes for 64 yards, and scored twice.

The loss ended the Chargers season with an overall record of 14-3.
