An erection of death , an angel of lust , or terminal erection is a post-mortem erection, technically priapism, observed in the corpse of a man who has been executed, especially with hanging.

This phenomenon has been linked to the pressure on the cerebellum created by the meshes. Spinal cord injuries are known to be associated with priapism. Injury to the cerebellum or spinal cord is often associated with priapism in surviving patients.
Death from being hanged, whether execution or suicide, has been observed affecting male and female genitals. In women, the labia and clitoris may become enlarged and there may be a blood vaginal discharge. In men, "a less complete penile erectile state, with urinary expenditure, mucus or prostate fluid often occurs... present in one case in three." Other causes of death can also cause this effect, including fatal shots to the head, major vascular damage, and deaths from poisoning. A postmortem priapism is an indicator that death may be rapid and violent. In the case reported from Thailand, excess sildenafil (Viagra) is considered a cause of erection of death in 64-year-old man.

- In the Fall and Fall of the Roman Empire Edward Gibbon relates anecdotes associated with Abulfeda that Ali, upon Muhammad's death, exclaimed, (O prophet, your penis straight up in the sky). This anecdotal understanding, however, is based on a mistranslation of Arabic sources by John Gagnier, who translated Abulfeda Muhammad's Life into Latin.
