The list of wounded reserves ( abbr. IR list ) is the official designation used by National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL) for athletes who are injured and can not play for a while. This is analogous to the injury list in the Canadian Football League (CFL) or the disabled list in Major League Baseball (MLB). The National Basketball Association (NBA) does not have a direct analogue to the list of injured reserves, rather than using a more general "inactive list" - goals that do not require players to get hurt.

This is used because the rules of this league allow only a limited number of players on each team's list. Designing players as "Injured/Reserve" frees up space, allowing teams to add new players during the recovery period of injured athletes. In the NFL, when a player is placed on the list, he can not return to play for the rest of the regular season; Another league allows players to return to play during this season.

A player may be placed on an injury reserve if he or she can not participate due to illness or injury, provided the player has passed the club's initial physical examination at the start of the season. To qualify for an IR due to injury, an injury should be sufficient (in the opinion of the team medical staff) to keep players unable to participate for seven days after the injury. Once placed in IR, teams can then replace players on their list. Players in IR may not return to active play for seven days, although they may participate in non-competitive events such as training, meetings, etc.

NFL Rules

A team can place a player on injury injuries ("reserves/injuries list" that are "not immediately available to participate with the club". Generally, these players may not practice or return to the Active List for the rest of the season (including postseason or Pro Bowl games) where they are placed on injured reserves, but allowed to be with the team.

During the pre-season, the league also allows players with long-term injuries, but does not end the season, to be placed into one of two titles: Physically unable to conduct (PUP), for injuries suffered during the previous season or during off-season training activities (a player who graduated physically at the start of the training camp and practices were physically capable of participating and thus ineligible for the PUP list), or non-football reserves/injuries, for injuries suffered outside of team or league activities (though names , this includes lingering injuries from playing college football, should the injured player be drawn up and join the team). Both designations are functionally identical that the player can be promoted to the active list at the 6th week of the regular season or placed on an injured reserve. During the regular season, players on PUP lists and injured reserves do not count towards the 53 league listings maximum, but are counted on the 90-man men's limit (also including squad players).

Starting in 2012, the NFL and NFLPA reached an agreement that allows one player to be placed in an injured reserve to be brought back to the active list. Provided that the player is on the last 53-man preseason list (Excluded rules for the 2012 season), and that injuries are considered making this player unable to practice or play football for about six weeks, players may be allowed to practice after Sunday 6, and be enabled to play after Sunday 8. Starting 2017, the team can now return two players from a reserve injury after Sunday 8.

Teams can also place players on the spot with a mild injury marking, but the team must release the player once he/she is healthy.

NBA Rules

Due to a breach in the use of an injured reserve list, where some teams are comfortable to use IRs to attract players without independent medical supervision, the injured reserve has been renamed the Inactive List with the last collective bargaining agreement. Beginning in the 2005-06 season, players can enter an inactive list one hour before tipping for just one match. The inactive list has at least one player and a maximum of three, subject to difficulty rules when teams with three injured players are on the inactive list having injured fourth players. Players sent to the NBA G League will continue to count the team's inactive list.
