Careers

Neurosurgical research and innovation

Maroon has conducted extensive research into neurotrauma, brain tumors and spinal diseases, which led to many innovative techniques for diagnosing and treating this disorder. Maroon was the first to publicize the use of ultrasound to detect venous air embolism (1968). Maroon et al. was the first to publicize the use of ultrasound to detect air in patients during neurosurgical procedures (1969) and to assess the reversal of the ophthalmic artery flow that exhibits carotid artery thrombosis (1969). Maroon et al. published simplified instrumentation for microvascular surgery in 1973 and in 1975, they pioneered a micro-approach for intra-orbital tumors. In 1977, they pioneered the use of CT scan as a guide system for performing intracranial biopsy. That same year, Maroon published the first paper on "burning hand" syndrome related to sports related spinal cord injuries in JAMA.

In 1982, Maroon et al. pioneered the radical orbital decompression procedure for severe exophthalmos dysthyroid. In 1985, they were the first to compare the removal of micro disks with chemonucleolysis, and in 1986, they were the first to use carbon dioxide lasers in the management of lymphangiomas from orbit. That year, Maroon et al. was the first to describe the results of their operation with microlumbar discectomy. In 1987, Maroon and Onik introduced percutaneous automatic otectomy as a minimally invasive new way to lift lumbar discs, and was then published extensively on this technique. In 1990, Maroon et al. published the first micro-approach to long-limb herniation of the lumbar spine and in 2007 they published a case of Golfer Stroke from Vertebral Artery Dissection.

Further breakthrough publications include the use of fish oil as an anti-inflammatory and an alternative to nonsteroidal drugs for discogenic pain (2006); a unifying hypothesis, immunoexcitotoxicity for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (2011); and the possible use of a caloric ketogenic diet is limited to the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (2013).

Sports medicine sports, concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) Sports Medicine,

Maroon is a team of neurosurgeons for Pittsburgh Steelers and Medical Director of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He is a former President of Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Together with neuropsychologist Mark Lovell, Maroon developed ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), a test to assess the presence and severity of symptoms of concussion. It has become a standard tool for assessing sports-related concussions.

Maroon is interested in the prevention and treatment of concussions, especially in football. In 2006, he joined the mild Traumatic Brain Injury Traumatic Committee, which in 2007 was renamed the Head, Neck, and Spine Committee. He has been consulted as an expert by the American media on this subject.

Based on his research on the predictors and scope of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), he claims there is reason to be skeptical of the widely reported incidence of CTE. His position has largely been met with negative comments in media and sports press as the NFL has as many as 4,500 former players reporting CTE symptoms.

Maroon was asked to testify to the New York City Council about the proposed rule of medical coverage for organized youth soccer in the city. Together with Russell Blaylock, he developed an inflammatory hypothesis for the biochemical mechanisms involved in CTE development after head trauma. In the 2015 movie Concussion, which "examines how American soccer players suffer major head injuries and crippling problems during life as a result of recurring concussions, and an attempt by the National Football League to deny it" Maroon is played by actor Arliss Howard. In the film, Maroon is portrayed as an NFL-biased physician who tries to deny the link between concussion and brain pathology found by Dr. Bennet Omalu and associated with CTE. Since the release of the film, several people have come forward to defend Maroon, stating that his portrayal in the film is sensational and untrue.

Fire prevention and life balancing

After his personal experience with exhaustion at the peak of his medical career, Maroon developed a strong interest in the prevention of fatigue and a more balanced life. She conducts extensive research into fatigue, fatigue prevention, and what is a healthy, balanced and successful life, beyond professional careers. Maroon has given a keynote presentation on this subject at national and international conferences. In 2017, he published the book Square One: A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life.
