The mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Prevention of the United States is to provide leadership in preventing and controlling injuries, ie reducing the incidence, severity, leading causes of death for those aged 1-44 years. A 1985 National Research Council report entitled Injury in America recommends that the United States Congress create a new program at CDC to address the problem of injury. Initially the program was supported with funding from the US Department of Transportation. In 1990 Congress passed the Act on Injury Control that authorized the program within the CDC, and in 1992, the CDC formally established the Center. The Center has three branches: Acute Care Division, Rehabilitation Research, and Disability Prevention; Division of Prevention of Unintentional Injury; and the Violence Prevention Division.
