Will Carroll (born 1970) is an American sports writer specializing in coverage of medical issues, including injuries and performance-enhancing drugs. The "Under the Knife" Column Carroll appeared on Baseball Prospectus for eight years during his work there as a senior writer, and he also contributed to Puck Prospectus' site radio and spun off site. He is the author of two books on medical topics related to sports..

Carroll is a member of the American Baseball Writers Association and the Pro Football Writers Association.

In 2014, she was awarded a MORE Award from the American Orthopedic Surgeon Academy for her story on Dr. Frank Jobe published in the Bleacher Report in 2013.

Careers

In 2003, Carroll joined staff from Baseball Prospectus, whom he served as an injury expert and wrote "Under Knives" column and periodically "Health Team Report" and hosted Baseball Prospectus Radio. In February 2009, he took over the role of Executive Editor of Puck Prospectus. In September 2010, Carroll announced his departure from Baseball Prospectus and published the last column "Under Knife".

In 2006, Carroll served as an injured member for the short The Fantasy Show on ESPN.

Starting in 2007, Carroll has worked as an NFL injury expert for SI.com. He also serves as senior writer for Football Outsiders, which focuses on football injuries.

In 2011, he joined SI.com, carrying "Under The Knife" (baseball) and "Injury Report" (football) aimed at sports injuries.

In 2013, he joined the Bleacher Report as the lead author for sports injuries. He goes on in 2015.

In 2014 at a public appearance in Dallas, Carroll admits he works as a consultant for at least one MLB team as well as for several other teams. It is believed that his team is the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners. In 2014, he was one of the inaugural hosts for Bleacher Report Radio on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. He brought Afternoon Drive with Jason Goff. He left in early 2015.

Carroll is one of the panelists, along with Jason Whitlock, for the first weekend of the ROME event at CBS Sports Network.

In 2015, Carroll joins FanDuel, a Scottish fantasy sports company. His role is unclear, but seems to have played a role in employing several other authors. In an interview at FSTA 2015, Carroll stated that he was brought in to help improve the injury notice in the FanDuel app.

Although the expert was injured, Carroll did not have any formal medical training.

Awards and differences

  • Carroll won an award for Best Fantasy Baseball Articles in Print from the Fantasy Sports Writing Association in 2005, 2006 and 2007 for an article he contributed to RotoWire Fantasy Baseball Magazine.
  • The Juice: The Real Basics of Baseball Problems (2005) won the Baseball News Baseball-SABR Baseball 2005 Award.
  • In 2008, Carroll was named a member of the American Baseball Writers Association and thus qualified to vote on the Major League post-season baseball prize and his nomination to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is no longer a member by 2014.
  • In 2009, Carroll was named a member of the Pro Football Writers Association. He is no longer a member by 2014.
  • In 2014, Carroll was awarded a MORE Award from the American Orthopedic Surgeon Academy for his article "Dr. Frank Jobe, Tommy John, and Surgical Changing Baseball Forever", published by Fire Report on July 17 2013. MORE is an abbreviation of Media Orthopedic Reporting Excellence.
