Head Injuries is the second studio album by Australian rock band Midnight Oil. They were formed in 1971 with Rob Hirst on drums, Andrew James on bass guitar, and Jim Moginie on main keyboards and guitars. In 1972 they added Peter Garrett on vocals and synthesizers. The group began to develop an aggressive and punk-hard rock sound for their rock pub fans. In 1977 Martin Rotsey joined the guitar. Their debut eponymous album, Midnight Oil , was released by their own label, Powderworks, in November 1978. The band built a special fan base, initially limited to Sydney, which expanded to other Australian cities through constant touring - performing about 200 shows in their first year. They became famous for their live performances, featuring two guitarists Moginie and Rotsey, drumming and backing vocals from Hirst and Garrett's towering presence as the lead singer. The first album has disappointed some critics for not capturing their strong live performances, playing with no sound and Garrett's vocals sounded stiff.

In October 1979 Head Injuries was released on Powderworks, it was produced by former Supercharge member Leszek J. Karski. This mixture of solid rock guitar with progressive flourishes and is an improvement by highlighting the strength and growth of the group. It peaked at No. 36 at the Australian Kent Music Report and by mid 1980 had reached gold status. In April 1980, bass guitarist James left for illness and was replaced by Peter Gifford (former Huntress, Ross Ryan Band). Further interest in Midnight Oil is produced by the popular EP Bird Noises, also produced by Karski, who peaked at No. 1. 28 on the Australian singles charts. One of its four tracks is a "Surfing Cake Island" that surfs and is named after rocky outcrops in the ocean off Sydney's Coogee. The band's third LP, Place without a Postcard , was released by CBS Records in November 1981.

Reception

At the time of release, Stuart Coupe said, "Right from the opening blades" Cold Cold Change ", it is clear that Head Injury is a major development for Midnight Oil.It really sounds like a live band - the spike of guitars, unrelenting drums, Peter's powerful voice... wah wiz, he's learning how to pronounce words. You can understand the lyrics without referring to the lyrics.
