Passage to Nirvana, A Zen Voyage Survivor: Reflection Losses, Invention, Healing & amp; Hope is a memoir by Lee Carlson, written over the years from 2005-2010 especially on a 60-foot sailboat named Nirvana that he shares with his fiancé Meg. It was his first book, though he had earned a living as a writer for much of his adult life, working first as a journalist, magazine editor and freelance writer, and then moving on to advertising and copywriting marketing. The book is centered around Carlson's Brain Traumatic Injury and subsequent recovery, as well as his mother's death from Traumatic Brain Injury. But the book is much more extensive, studying subjects such as Zen Buddhism, sailing, divorce, children, family and even poetry. In the end this is a book about finding peace and happiness after a traumatic life event, a book about finding joy in life.

Ringkasan plot

Passage to Nirvana began with Carlson's accident, when he was hit by a car standing outside the car wash, banged his head hard on the sidewalk, broke his skull, fell into a mild coma and maintained Brain Traumatic. Injury, with bleeding in the brain and other damage. The story follows him through his short hospital stay, then a year's rehabilitation in Florida, then returns to the North Fork of Long Island where he tries to rebuild his ruined life. His wife had abandoned him and moved with their children, his business had evaporated, he had no home and had to start by paying attention to renew his life. During his years in Florida he also helped take care of his mother, who was severely deformed from her own traumatic brain injury which sustained when she fell off the underground staircase. She is in a wheelchair, unable to walk, talk or eat herself. When he was in Florida, his mother finally died. After returning to Long Island, more misfortune seemed to continue: his aunt died of cancer, as did his brother-in-law, and he returned to Buffalo to help his sister and her children while her brother-in-law was in the hospital.

While this may sound unhealthy and oppressive, most of the book is inspiring, positive affirmations about life. Carlson concentrated on Zen Buddhist lessons and his meditation as a way to help him recover, working with renowned writer and teacher Zen Peter Matthiessen. Part of this book takes place in Ocean Zendo, a Zen center run by Matthiessen, and much of this book is a meditation on the spiritual aspect of healing, receiving and rebuilding life. Finally, Carlson meets a beautiful, understandable woman who has gone through her own difficulties: a difficult divorce, raising two children as a single mother. They fell in love, and decided to buy a sailboat named "Nirvana" which they found rotting on a boat in St. Louis. Martin. They renovated the boat, sailed back to the east end of Long Island, where they joined their four children and two dogs, working to create a new family and a new life. Eventually they sailed "Nirvana" to the Bahamas to write winter leave, where most of the book was written.

However, trying to describe the "plot" is difficult, because it is really a collection of short essays, some about events that take place in real time, some about Traumatic Brain Injury, some reflections on various aspects of Eastern philosophy and thought, small writers. Unique writing styles

The book is written as a series of short, interconnected essays, many of which are short, short stories of no more than a few pages, using some examples of Carlson's life and recovery as a kind of moral fairy tale. Most chapters are preceded by very short poems, often consisting of only three or four words, called Carlson as "Po." The narrative of the book is not linear, and in the introduction to Carlson's book says that many unique book styles stem from how his brain functions during his recovery. The Po because at first he could not remember a long sentence; short chapters because he can not remember longer chapters, and non-linear narratives because that's how his mind works, have trouble concentrating on one thing for long periods of time. Thus the narrative jumps forward and backward, revolves around the time, and refreshes inventively and appeals. At the same time, each short chapter is designed as a stand-alone essay, so readers can pick up a book, move on to any chapter and read it as a kind of short story.

Background and publication

Written during 2005-2010, and published in 2010, Passage to Nirvana was rejected by a number of major publishers and agents, due to its unusual style of writing and layout. Because of his background in magazine publishing, Carlson decided to form his own publishing company, Henry Chapin and Sons, to publish and market the book. Given his interest in new technologies, the Internet, and the rapidly changing publishing business, he also decided to use a new crowdfunding paradigm to raise money for book publishing, and collected nearly $ 13,000 from small donors, individuals using the art funding website of the kickstarter fund. He then used Facebook, as well as Amazon.com's worldwide network of sites like Amazon Japan as a way of marketing books and reaching readers around the world, where the book finds followers, gathering fans from not only the US but from Canada, Mexico, Peru, Brazil , Argentina, Chile, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy, Russia, Poland, Morocco, South Africa, Croatia, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and other countries.
