Tendinitis (also tendonitis ), which means tendonitis, is a type of tendinopathy that is often confused with more common tendinosis, which has similar symptoms but requires different treatments. (The suffix -itis indicates a disease characterized by inflammation.) The term tendinitis is generally reserved for tendon injuries involving large-scale acute injuries accompanied by inflammation. Tendinitis is usually referred to in combination with the involved body parts, such as Achilles tendinitis (affecting the Achilles tendon), or patellar tendinitis (knee jumper, affecting the patellar tendon).

Jenis

Tendinitis injuries often occur in the upper and lower shoulders (including rotator cuff), and are less common in the hip and body. The variation in frequency and severity of individual tendinitis will vary depending on the type, frequency and severity of exercise or use; for example, rock climbers tend to develop tendinitis in their fingers or elbows, swimmers on their shoulders. Dancers tend to develop tendinitis in their ankles and legs. Achilles tendinitis is a common injury, especially in sports involving lunging and jumping, while Patella's tendinitis is common among basketball players and volleyball due to the number of jumps and landing. A veterinarian who is equivalent to Achilles tendinitis is a bent tendon, tendinitis of a shallow digital tendon of a horse.

Diagnosis

Symptoms can vary from pain or pain and local joint stiffness, to the heat that surrounds the entire joint around the inflamed tendon. In some cases, swelling occurs along with heat and redness, and there may be a knot visible around the joint. With this condition, the pain is usually worse during and after the activity, and the tendons and joints may become stiff the next day when the muscles tighten from the tendon movement. Many patients report stressful situations in their lives in correlation with the initial pain that may contribute to the symptoms.

If tendinitis symptoms last for several months (6 months) or longer, it may be tendinosis.

Treatment

Treatment of tendon injury is largely conservative. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), rest, and gradual return to exercise is a common therapy. Rest helps in the prevention of further damage to the tendon. Ice, compression, and elevation are also often recommended. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotics or braces can also be useful. Initial recovery usually takes 2 to 3 days and full recovery in 3 to 6 months. Tendinosis occurs because the acute healing phase has ended (6-8 weeks) but has left the area not getting well. Treatment of tendinitis helps reduce some of the risk of developing tendinosis, which takes longer to heal.

Steroid injections have not been proven to have long-term benefits but have proven to be more effective than NSAIDs in the short term.

In chronic tendinitis or laser therapy tendonosis is found to be better than conservative treatment in reducing pain; However, no other results were assessed. Both prolotherapy and PRP injections are being used more often with good short-term and long-term clinical results in tendonosis - the study is only slightly positive for this treatment modality due to poor design of many completed studies.
