Professional career
Cincinnati Bengals (2001-2010)
The Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League picked Johnson in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft with a total vote of 36.
In Johnson's rookie year, he saw moderate playing time, catching 28 passes for 329 yards and one goal. In 2003, he set a Bengals franchise record by recording 1,355 yard recipients. In 2004, he caught 95 passes for 9 goals and 1,274 yards, including 117 receiving yards in a 58-48 win against Cleveland Browns.
season 2005
He then surpassed the franchise record in 2005, recording 1,432 meters. He led the AFC in receiving the yard for four consecutive seasons, and he made Pro Bowl five times in a row from 2003 to 2007.
"List"
During the 2005 NFL season, Johnson announced that he would keep a checklist, titled Covered 85 in '05 , which would evaluate the back of the defense that successfully protected it. On November 2, 2005, Marvin Lewis, head coach of Bengals, replaced Johnson's list with another titled, Doing all he could to lead his team to a 11-6-05 victory. The list, a clear parody of the original, asks some questions about Johnson's performance both on and off the field. According to the Bengals' official website, the list is aimed at antagonizing their division competitors, Baltimore Ravens, which the Bengalis will play in four days. Johnson is unhappy with the new list, because he has developed superstitious beliefs in the older list. He has a star performance during the game, pushing the return of the original list.
In 2007, Title and Yahoo! create an online version of his checklist. This checklist allows fans to choose where the NFL Johnson quarterback wants to play with the most catches. Each vote helped him raise money for the charity project, "Feed the Children" .
2006 season
On April 20, 2006, Johnson signed a contract extension until 2011.
During the first half of the 2006 season, Johnson saw little activity. Having stalled due to an initial injury, his productivity has fallen sharply. During the first eight weeks of the 2006 season, he only managed to catch two goals, while collecting only 483 yards. However, after shaving Mohawk and changing his mentality, he has a runaway game in an effort to lose against the San Diego Fans. Johnson collected 260 yard receipts and scored twice, which broke the previous Bengals record for most receiving yard in the game. He went on to collect 190 yard receipts and 3 goals in a 31-16 win over the New Orleans Saints the following week. This gave him an NFL record of 450 receiving yards in back-to-back games (currently 2nd place behind Josh Gordon of Cleveland Browns which has 498 meters in back to back games in 2013), breaking the previous record of 448 set by San Francisco 49ers recipient John Taylor in 1989. In the following week, he gained a receiving 123 meters, breaking the record of receiving three games since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 and coming within 40 meters of the all-time record.
Johnson finished the 2006 season with 87 receptions for the league leading 1,369 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was the first Bengal to lead the NFL in accepting the yard. He and Houshmandzadeh also became the first Bengals co-workers who each garnered more than 1,000 received yard in the same season.
In addition to being one of the most prolific recipients in the NFL, Johnson is also one of the most popular. In a fan vote for the 2006 Pro Bowl, he completed his first in elections for wide receivers, and fourth overall with a total vote of 987,650. He has gained national attention for his flamboyant attitude, which is often seen during the celebration of his famous zone end after catching a passing goal. In a list released in August 2006 by Fox Sports that listed the top 10 sailboats in professional sports, Johnson was ranked top.
2007 season
In the first game of the season, on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, Johnson scored the first goal of the game with a 39-yard pass from Carson Palmer. Following a touchdown, he grabs a jacket that resembles a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees jacket that says, "Future H.O.F. 20 ??". Johnson finished the game with 5 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. In the next game against the Cleveland Browns, he collected 209 yards on 11 catches for two goals in a 51-45 defeat. This gave him a total of 7,229 career yard recipients, breaking the record of the Bengals franchise previously held by Isaac Curtis. The next match against Seattle Seahawks, he reached nine receptions for 138 yards when Bengal lost again. Against the New York Jets, where the Bengals won 38-31, he had 3 receptions for 102 yards and was in a hurry for 15 yards.
In the fourth quarter of the Bengals week-nine losses to Buffalo Bills, Johnson was deposed from the field on a stretcher, with a head injury reported. He came out to graduate, with less than a minute left in a 33-21 defeat, and then flanked by Donte Whitner and Coy Wire. He reportedly moved in the hospital. He finished the match with three catches 48 yards. A CT scan is performed to detect nerve damage back negatively, and he does not miss any matches from injury.
For the next two games, Johnson did not score or earn more than 86 yards. But he had a breakout performance in the November 25 win over the Tennessee Titans, capturing 12 career high passes for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. It gave him more than 1,000 yards receiving for his sixth consecutive season, and moved him past Carl Pickens as the all-time Bengal leader in the reception.
At week 15, Johnson and Houshmandzadeh earned more than 1,000 receiving yards for the second year in a row. However, the loss to the San Francisco 49ers that week ensured the team would finish the year with their first losing season since 2002. Johnson completed the season with 4 arrests for 131 yards and 2 goals in the victory over Miami Dolphins, giving him 93 receptions to 1,440 yards and 8 goals on this season.
His 1440 yard set a new Bengals franchise record, breaking his own record of 1,432 in 2005. This was the third time he finished the season with a new Bengals record to receive the yard. The third most dompolnya size in the NFL, the 12th most recipe, and his goal tied for the 15th most in the league.
Johnson was authorized for the 2008 Pro Bowl team, which instead chose teammate T. J. Houshmandzadeh. Due to the injury, however, the recipient Patriots Randy Moss was forced to withdraw from the Pro Bowl, and Johnson was chosen as his successor. This election marks the fifth consecutive Pro Bowl election. Johnson and Houshmandzadeh became the first couple of Bengals recipients to make the Pro Bowl in the same year.
2008 season
Preseason
On January 13, 2008, Johnson was a guest at ESPN's Mike & amp; Mike radio show. During the interview, he discussed how the media and the team treated him during the 2007 season, saying, "I am labeled selfish and cancer, and it hurts... Fingers pointed me this year.If teams and organizations want to advance themselves (make playoffs) I think you should get rid of the problem... It hurt me.It did me like that and did not have my back.Things said, and nobody came to my defense. "However, head coach Marvin Lewis commented on the matter by saying that the Bengals will not trade Johnson. "He was Cincinnati Bengal long enough," Lewis said.
On February 4, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that Johnson felt betrayed by Marvin Lewis and personally threatened to sit in the 2008 season, even though his agent Drew Rosenhaus rejected him. Nine days before the mandatory minicamp opening of the Bengals on June 12, Johnson told ESPN The Magazine that "of course I" was present, confirmed by his agent. After an ankle surgery on June 18, he returned to full practice in August. He suffered labor partly torn in his first pre-season game on 17 August, but decided to play the whole season with injuries.
