In tetrapod anatomy, lumbar is an adjective meaning from or related to the abdominal segment of the torso, between the diaphragm and the sacrum.

The lumbar region is sometimes referred to as the lower spine, or as a back area in its proximity.

In human anatomy, the five lumbar vertebrae (the vertebrae in the lumbar back region) are the largest and strongest in the moving portion of the spine, and can be distinguished by the absence of foramen in the transverse process, and by the absence of the sides on the side of the body. In most mammals, the lumbar region of the spine curves outwards.

The actual spinal cord (Angelamedulla spinalis) ends between the first and second vertebrae of this series, called L1 and L2. The nerve tissue that extends below this point is the individual strands that collectively form the cauda equina. Among each lumbar vertebra out the nerve roots, and these nerve roots recombine to form the largest single nerve in the human body, the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve runs through the back of each leg and to the foot. This is why disturbances in the lower back that affect the nerve roots, such as spinal herniation, can cause pain that spreads along the sciatic nerve (sciatica) down into the legs.

There are several muscles in the lower back that help with rotation, flexibility and strength. These muscles are prone to injury, especially when lifting heavy objects, or lifting while twisting. Lower back muscle strain can be very painful but will usually heal in a few days or weeks.

The lumbar portion of the spine carries the greatest weight and also provides the most flexibility, a combination that makes it prone to injury and wear from time to time. This is why low back pain is very common.
