According to Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, car accidents are a growing criminal matter.
The driver maneuvers the unsuspecting driver into an accident to make a fake insurance claim. Cars generally suffer minor damage in relation to large demand which is then filed fraudulently. In 2011, a group of seven people in North and South Carolina were arrested for allegedly stealing more than $ 100,000 through an hour-long crash scheme.

- The "Swoop and Squat" scheme involves two cars: one drive beside the victim while the other 'swoops' in front of the victim's car and stops abruptly, causing a rear- end crash. Another scenario (known as 'flash for cash') occurs when drivers turn on their lights at the intersection to let you out, then hit you on purpose. Florida is the only country that has a special law against fraudulent car accidents to receive insurance money. Other countries have passed or targeted a variety of laws that target gang attempts to bring in real and fake crash passengers to file claims of telephone accidents. At least 15 states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation targeting runners from accidental gangs or asking passengers for a real car crash.
