Gregory Wayne Oden Jr. (born January 22, 1988) is a former professional American basketball player who last played for the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Oden, a 7Ã, ft. 0 in (2.13 m), 273 pound center, playing college basketball at Ohio State University for a season, where the team is the Big Ten Champion and the runners-up tournament in the NCAA Men's Division Basketball Championships. He currently serves as a student manager for Ohio State Buckeyes.
On 28 June 2007, Oden was voted first overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He underwent a knee micro surgery operation in September 2007, and missed the entire 2007-08 NBA season as a result. He recovered and made his NBA debut on the opening night of 2008. On March 15, 2012, he was released from Trail Blazers after a long history of injury. He signed a contract with the Miami Heat on August 7, 2013, more than three years after last appearing in an NBA game. On October 28, 2016, Oden stated that he finished with a basketball and would not return as a player.

Initial years
Oden was born in Buffalo, New York, and moved with his family to Terre Haute, Indiana at the age of nine. He studied at Sarah Scott Middle School in Terre Haute, where he first played an interscholastic basketball. Oden then moved in with his mother and brother and attended Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana which he led to three successive Indiana 4A Championship championships before graduating in 2006. He was named the High School Parade -Player of the Year 2005 (along with Monta Ellis) and 2005 National Children's Basketball of the Year. He repeated as the Gatorade Male National Basketball of the Year in 2006. Oden was selected as Indiana Basketball Player in Indiana. He is also at McDonald's All-American Team and plays in the All-American game, and earned the All-American Parade's first-team awards for the second year in a row.

College career
On June 29, 2005, Oden and Lawrence North team mates Mike Conley, Jr. announced that it will enter Ohio State University from the 2006-07 season.
Oden underwent surgery on his right wrist on June 16, 2006, in Indianapolis to repair a ligament injury that occurred at the end of the high school season. As a result, he sat on the Ohio State bench for the start of the 2006-07 season, where Buckeyes was ranked 1st before losing to North Carolina. He made his college debut on December 2, 2006, against Valparaiso, coming off the bench. He finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. In December of that year, Steve Kerr described him as "a player once in a decade".
The Big Ten Oden is honored as the Player of the Week, along with Alando Tucker of Wisconsin, on January 29, 2007. In the previous week, he had an average of 18 points and 11.5 rebounds. On March 6, 2007, Oden was named First Team All-Big Ten and was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year for the conference. Oden fouled for the first time in his college career against Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and was plagued by gross problems throughout the tournament. In Sweet Sixteen, Oden blocked a potentially winning shot in the final seconds against Tennessee to defend a 85-84 victory, and then led Ohio State through Memphis and Georgetown to advance to the 2007 National Championships. In the title race, Oden scored 25 points, and 12 rebounds and 4 shots were blocked in a bid to lose against Florida Gators.
Oden, along with Kevin Durant, Arron Afflalo, Alando Tucker and Acie Law were named for the All-American Associated Press Team. Oden and Durant were the first students to vote for the First All-American Team since 1990, and third and fourth overall. Throughout his high school career and college, Oden has never lost a home game.

Portland Trail Blazers (2007-2012)
On April 20, 2007, Oden announced that he would enter the 2007 NBA draft. On 28 June 2007, he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers by choosing the # 1 overall. To start his Trail Blazers career, Oden chose uniform number 52. On July 1 , before his first NBA drill, Oden signed a contract that provides two guaranteed seasons and team options for the third and fourth seasons. On September 14, 2007, Oden underwent a microphone surgery on his right ailing knee. He missed the whole season. Oden's progress is recorded on the Trail Blazers website and his blog.
Although compiled in 2007, Oden was classified as a rookie for the 2008-09 season due to a knee injury. Entering the 2008-09 season, he was listed at 250 pounds (110 kg), but according to Blazers coach Jay Jensen he weighed about 290 pounds (130 kg) in July. Oden left his NBA debut with a leg injury after playing thirteen minutes of goalless against the Los Angeles Lakers. He returned on November 12, 2008, after a two-week hiatus, and scored his first NBA points in the first quarter against the Miami Heat. On January 19, 2009, Oden scored a career-high 24 and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 102-85 win against the Milwaukee Bucks. On February 13, 2009, he injured his left knee in a match against the Golden State Warriors, crashing his knee with opponent Corey Maggette, and missed three weeks with a knee injury.
On 23 November 2009, Oden likened his career to points in the match again with 24. He made a new career to rebound in the game by 20 on December 1st. On December 5, 2009, Oden injured his left knee. in the first quarter of the game. He was taken out of court with two connected litters. Later, he underwent surgery for the left patell crack and missed the rest of the season. The injury marked the second time Oden spent time playing with injury.
On November 17, 2010, the team announced that Oden would undergo microfraktur surgery on his left knee, ending the 2010-2011 season. The injury marked the third season of OBA NBA was cut short due to a knee injury.
On December 9, 2011, the Trail Blazers announced that Oden had undergone an unspecified "setback" which made them less optimistic about his ability to play in the 2011-2012 season. Instead of signing a $ 8.9 million qualifying bid, Oden and the team negotiated a different offer. On February 3, 2012, Oden underwent an arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. On February 20, 2012, Oden is scheduled for a procedure in his left knee similar to the procedure he underwent 17 days earlier. On March 15, 2012, Oden was released by Trail Blazers to create space on the list for trade acquisitions. Matta states that since September 2014, Oden has worked with other Ohio State coaches. In June 2015, Oden did the exercises with the Charlotte Hornets and Dallas Mavericks. He told the media that he's trying his NBA comeback with plans to return to the league for the 2016-17 season.

On August 26, 2015, Oden signed a one-year, $ 1.2 million contract with the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association. On December 9, he recorded a season-high 22 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Shandong. On February 1, 2016, he parted company with Jiangsu. In 25 games for the club, he averages 13.0 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game.
Personal life
On August 11, 2014, Oden was charged with battery for allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face on August 7 in Lawrence, Indiana. He pleaded guilty in 2015 to batteries with moderate physical injury, and three other charges were dropped. He was on probation and ordered to pay fines and attend counseling.
On April 12, 2016, Oden was hired by Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball team to become student manager for the team while he returned to finish his degree on campus. Despite being a manager at school, Oden is reportedly still waiting to be offered a contract by overseas basketball teams to continue his basketball career, but when asked in October whether he plays basketball again, he says, "I hope it's over."
