Histori
TIRR Memorial Hermann traces its roots back to the early 1950s when polio was at the peak of the epidemic in the United States. Early that decade, William A. Spencer, M.D., founded one of the country's first polio care centers in Houston. The Southwest Polyomyelitis Respiration Center is dedicated to patient care and research and performs innovative work.
Dr. Spencer was primarily involved in the development of the physiograph, a tool known in the March 22, 1954 edition of Life magazine's edition of Life's magazine, for its ability to record vital functions. This technology puts forward teaching and research efforts and is credited as an early example of the advanced monitoring system we use today.
With the discovery of a polio vaccine in the 1960s, the expertise developed by a nationally recognized respiratory center was applied to rehabilitate patients with catastrophic disease.
