the long thoracic nerve ( Bell's external respiratory nerve ; the posterior thoracic nerve ) supplies the anterior serratus muscle. These nerves typically arise from the anterior jute three spinal cord roots: the fifth, sixth, and seventh cervical nerves (C5-C7) although the roots of C7 may not exist. The roots of C5 and C6 penetrate through the scalenus medius, while the C7 root passes in front of the muscle.
The nerve descends through the rear cervicoaxillary canal (posterior to) the brachial plexus and the axillary artery and vein, resting on the outer surface of the anterior serratus. It extends along the thorax side to the lower limit of that muscle, supplying the filaments to each of the multiplications (projections like fingers).

Damage
Because of his long and relatively shallow journey, he is vulnerable to injury either through direct trauma or stretching. Injuries have been reported in almost all sports, usually from a blow to the ribs under the outstretched arm. The long chest nerves can also be damaged during surgery for breast cancer, especially radical mastectomy involving the removal of axillary lymph nodes.
Nerve injury can occur due to carrying a heavy bag over the shoulder for a long time. There are also isolated damage reports on this nerve as a variant of Parsonage Turner Syndrome, an autoimmune disease.
Symptoms are often minimal - if symptoms, posterior shoulder or scapular type burn pain may be reported.
The neural lesions paralyze the anterior serratus to produce a winged scapula, the most prominent when the arm is lifted forward or when the patient pushes the arm outstretched to the wall. However, even winging may not be proven until trapezius stretches enough to reveal injuries a few weeks later.
